Story of Impact
A The soils in the vast Bidibidi refugee settlement have been both a blessing and a burden to Joyce Poni for as long as she could remember. It was the soil that fed her three children, but it was a tired, ungenerous soil. Each planting season felt like a gamble with fate. The seeds she bought from the open market were a lottery; some grew, many didn’t. The small amount of fertilizer she could afford often felt like a whisper of encouragement to a crop that needed a shout.
Her one-acre plot of maize was her entire world. Yet, year after year, the harvest was a quiet disappointment. It was enough to subsist, but never enough to get ahead. School fees were a constant worry, the roof of her home leaked when the rains were heavy, and the dream of buying a cow as an investment felt as distant as the moon.
One afternoon, as Poni was weeding a patch of stubborn couch grass, a young man named Rafsanjan, wearing a bright green polo shirt with the name “Agrigate” on it, approached her. Sarah’s smile was as warm as the midday sun. Poni was wary; she had seen countless NGOs come and go, their promises fading like the morning mist.
But Rafsanjan didn’t make grand promises. He spoke of practical things. He knelt and felt the soil, talking about its health. He explained that Agrigate wasn’t a charity; it was a partner. “We provide certified seeds that are guaranteed to germinate, and fertilizers tailored for your soil, in packs you can afford,” Rafsanjan said, showing Joyce Poni a small, sealed bag of hybrid maize seeds.
The most revolutionary part was the financing. With the already unstable income patterns of many smallholder farmers like Joyce Poni, Rafsanjan put forward the idea of walking the journey of production together by planning for quality crop production inputs ahead of time in times when they have disposable income. Through the unique mobile micro-saving system, Joyce Poni can be able to save in small increments by simply dialing *284*34# to purchase the quality production inputs she needs. Through the mobile micro-saving systems, many smallholder farmers like Joyce Poni can build sustainable financial cycles and plan better in the crop production enterprises.
For Joyce Poni, this was a radical idea. A financing approach that wasn’t designed to trap her, but to empower her. It seemed too good to be true. But looking at her wilting plants, she knew she couldn’t afford not to take a chance. She signed up for a starter pack: seeds, the right fertilizer, and a schedule for planting and application that Rafsanjan helped her create.
The difference was visible within months. Certified quality crop production inputs sprouted with a vigor Joyce Poni had never seen. The stalks were thick and a deep, healthy green. When her neighbors saw her field, they began to talk. The single acre of land, once a symbol of her struggle, was becoming a demonstration of possibility.
When the harvest came, Joyce Poni could hardly believe her eyes. The cobs were large and full, the kernels plump. She had harvested more than double her usual yield. After selling her surplus at a fair price—a connection also facilitated by Agrigate’s network—she walked to the local mobile money agent and paid back her pending Sacco debts.
For the first time in her adult life, after all debts were settled, she held a substantial amount of cash. It wasn’t a fortune, but it was freedom.
That evening, her children ate a descent meal, a rare treat. The next week, she paid their school fees for the entire term and bought new iron sheets to repair the roof. With the remaining money, she purchased ten chicks, the beginning of a small poultry business she had dreamed of for years.
Joyce Poni’s success became a story told in the village. One by one, her neighbors sought out the Gentleman in the green shirt. The next season, a dozen more farms in her village partnered with Agrigate. The tired, soils began to yield its hidden potential. The village was no longer just surviving; it was starting to thrive.
Looking out over her field, ready for the next planting, Joyce Poni felt a profound sense of hope. Agrigate hadn’t just given her seeds and fertilizer; it had given her dignity. It had planted a seed of change in her heart, and she was watching it grow, transforming the landscape of her life and her community, one harvest at a time.
